چکیده

The fundamental question of how the flow velocity of the background plasma can influence the motion of magneto-hydrodynamics instabilities and, in ultimate analysis, their stability is addressed. The growth of Resistive Wall Mode instabilities in toroidal confinement devices well represents one example of such a problem. In this paper we illustrate a new strategy that allowed, for the first time in a Reversed Field Pinch experiment, a fully controlled rotation of a non-resonant instability by means of a set of active coils and how the new findings compare with numerical modeling.

Externally Induced Rotation of the Resistive Wall Modes in RFX-mod

Introduction During the last years, significant progress was made in the control of resistive wall modes (RWMs) in reversed field pinches (RFPs). It was demonstrated on several different devices that static current driven RWMs can be completely suppressed and controlled [1,2]. It is well known that also tokamak advanced scenarios suffer from RWM instabilities. The RWM in a tokamak is typically ...

Reversed-Field Pinch Contributions to Resistive Wall Mode Physics and Control

Optimal feedback control of resistive-wall modes (RWM) is of common interest for toroidal fusion concepts that use conducting walls for stabilization of ideal MHD modes. From the RWM control point of view, the RFP situation is in many respects similar to the advanced tokamak situation in the presence of very low plasma rotation, where the most effective stabilizing mechanism is the feedback act...

Effect of a resistive vacuum vessel on dynamo mode rotation in reversed field pinches

Locked ~i.e., nonrotating! dynamo modes give rise to a serious edge loading problem during the operation of high current reversed field pinches. Rotating dynamo modes generally have a far more benign effect. A simple analytic model is developed in order to investigate the slowing down effect of electromagnetic torques due to eddy currents excited in the vacuum vessel on the rotation of dynamo m...

A neural network approach for the detection of the locking position in RFX

Recently in RFX, where wall locked modes were always present, a new technique has demonstrated the possibility to induce a continuous rotation of the modes with respect to the wall. In this technique the non-linear coupling of the m=0 and m=1 modes has been used to decouple the modes themselves. In the present experiments the mode rotation is induced with a preprogrammed waveform of a toroidal ...

Measurement of the resistive-wall-mode stability in a rotating plasma using active MHD spectroscopy.

The stability of the resistive-wall mode (RWM) in DIII-D plasmas above the conventional pressure limit, where toroidal plasma rotation in the order of a few percent of the Alfve n velocity is sufficient to stabilize the n=1 RWM, has been probed using the technique of active MHD spectroscopy at frequencies of a few Hertz. The measured frequency spectrum of the plasma response to externally appli...
